5k Horus Heresy Battle Report

Here is a game between myself and Olly83hammer last night.

It was 5k a side.


Vulkan, Chaplain, 10 Terminators in a Spartan, 8 Pyroclast in a Spartan, 2 x 10 man Tactical Squads in Rhinos, Kheres Contemptor and a Vindicator.

Imperial Fist Allies:
Praetor and 10 Terminators in a Spartan, 10 Man Breacher Squad in a Land Raider, Whirlwind Scorpius and a Fellblade.


Mortarion, Farley Rusk, Primus Medicae and 9 Deathshroud in a Spartan, Master of Signal, 2 x 10 man Tactical Squads in Rhinos, 10 man Heavy Flamers Squads in Rhino, 5 man Lascannon Squad, 3 Kheres Contemptors, 3 Medusas, Cerberus and Typhon.

Sons of Horus Allies:
Abbadon, 5 Justarin and Lascannon Contemptor.



 The Loyalist win the role off and choose to go first, and deploy the majority of their heavy armour in the centre of the board, 2 Spartans just being deployed off to the left of the battlefield and a Land raider deployed inside the city on the far right.

 Traitors deploy exclusively in the City. Deploying their heavy armour pride and centre. Kheres Dreads on the right with 2 rhinos and Lascannon team, Master of Signals, Rhino and Last Contemptor in and around far left structure.

Medusas and Abbadon with Justarian left in reserves.

Turn 1

Traitors didn’t manage to steal. The loyalist forces push forward full steam with most vehicles going 18″ forward.

 The 2 Spartans go up the left flank with great walls covering their advance and reach the breach head. The Fellblade races forward into a firing position as does the vindicator.

 The land raider and rhino smash their way up the right flank. The last spartan pushed deep into the centre board.

 Every blast from the Vindicator, Whirlwind and Fellblade with great accuracy rains down on the Contemptors and rhinos making all Contemptors Snap shot next turn and destroying both rhinos.

Traitors push forward towards their prey and ready all theor heavy weapons?

 Mortarion and Death Shroud get out of their Spartan, ready to assault. Everything else gains better fire positions to maximise damage.

The Contemptors pull off a great tactical move and plug the breach in the wall. The Lascannons shoot at the land raider taking 3 Hull points off.

 The Cerberus trains it’s great weapon on the fellblade with only a single shot manages to penetrate it. Lascannons and the Typhon destroy the Vindicator and bury it beneath rubble.

The Death Shroud charge the Spartans blowing it up and killing 3 Pyroclast!

Mortarion shunts and charges the Comtemptor but nothing happens.

Turn 2

 The fellblade pushes forward to try and clear the Contemptors; thunder blitzing one but the other managing to survive. Effectively holding the Spartans at bay! Vulkan displeased with this disembarks as does the Chaplin.

The Imperial Fists Spartan has to redeploy and is forced to turn around and find another route.

Elsewhere the Pyroclast and surround and cut off. The Breachers disembark out their Land raider ready to charge as do the tactical squad.

Whirlwind hammers the Heavy Flamers and they fall off the board. The spartan blows both Contemptors up and Bolter fire from the tactical squad kills 1 marine.

The Pyroclast knowing their lives are sold charge the Typhon stripping 4 hull points off it, the Breachers charge the spartan destroying it and vulkan fails the 6 inch charge to the Cerberus (even with fleet!)

(we decided before game that it would be cool if he cool charge the return he comes in!)
The medusas decide to stay off the board for another turn.

The courtyard is flooded with bodies! The Cerberus thunder blizts the Pyroclast killing 2! The Typhon falls back to survive. The Death Shroud rush to their Primarchs aid to get him back in the fight. Tactical marines advance and fall back where they are needed to. Open fire from the Lascannon squad explodes the Land Raider. Bolt pistols kill 3 marines including the sergeant. The Cerberus once again penetrates the Fellblade and the Typhon takes off 1 hull point from the Fellblade. The Master of signal fires his bombardment at the Whirlwind causing it to snap fire.

Death Shroud make it into the Contemptor, Sons of Horus charge the Breachers and the tactical squad fails the charge through the ruins but the Contemptor makes it and pins the Salamanders in place. Farleys rusk and the Medicae charge the Pyroclast. Miraculously the Salamanders dreadnought survives all the melta bombs by making 5 out of 6, 5++ invulnerable saves! The Breachers bring down one Terminator but get slaughter and they run, the Pyroclast get slaughtered.

The Traitors secure the Courtyard!

Turn 3

Loyalists continue to push forward and press the attack.

The Salamander Terminators get out of their Spartan ready to charge the Cerberus. And all available forces push towards the courtyard except the lone rhino heading towards the outskirts of the city knowing Medusas could turn up there. Loyalists open fire and a spartan fires all it’s Lascannons obliterating the Master if Signal. Heavy Bolter fire and Lascannons kill the remaining Justarian leaving Abbadon alone.
Vulkan charges the Cerberus first and then the Terminators. Vulkan smashes his hammer down first destroy the war engine first. I goes nuclear but luckily the blast scatters 10 inches and the terminators survive
The Contemptor survives again… Saving 4 pens this time!Unlucky the medusa are held up again!

The remaining Traitor forces push fall back again to a rally point this time. With most forces engaged in combat the remaining fire mainly Lascannons pours into vulkan taking 2 wounds off. The Typhon fires at the terminators but a bad scatter results in only 1 being killed. Farleys Rusk and the tactical marines charge into the tactical marines of the Salamanders.
They are wiped out to a man. Mortarion strikes and decapitates the Contemptor into two halves.

Turn 4

Loyalist push home the advantage and the Imperial fists Praetor and Terminators get out of the Spartan to charge the Death Shroud later.
Vulkan strides on towards the Typhon. Whilst the Tactical squad disembarks and continues on foot to the edge of the board. All remaining firepower is put into the Typhon but does nothing. Some Combi-meltas fire at Abbadon but he survives.

The 11 Terminators charge and through a display of power the Death Shroud Chemically burn 3 Terminators inside their suits and tenet drop to the ground dead and the makes them fail their charge!
Vulkan, however, smashed into the Typhon and destroys it with his hammer!

Mortarion and the Death Shroud faced with 2 units of Termintors in for of them know the time to strike was now. They focus on the imperial fist terminators and get ready to charge. The medusas come in and in range of the Salamander terminators. Then what fire can be brought to bare on the Salamander Terminators pours their way, medusa opening first have a horrible scatter and fail to kill any, combined Bolter and Lascannon fire kills two.
Meanwhile, the Deathshroud kill another 2 Imperial Fists. Chem weapons choking the air.
Mortarion, Abbadon and the Deathshroud charge into the Inperial Fists. Mortarion challenging the Sergeant to to personal combat. After the dust settles, the sergeants shield has kept him alive from the onslaught of Mortarion and his hammer dealing a wound in return.
The Preator and all remaining Fist’s terminators lay dead. Also in return (from only 13 attacks) all 9 death shroud die (not 1 invulnerable save!!) and Abbadon is left standing in a pile of dead bodies!

Turn 5

All Loyalist forces are now converging in their final targets, bolt pistol fire stripes 2 hull points off a medusa. the Fellblade aims at the remaining Traitor forces in the right structure. Combining fore with the whirlwind, the dust settled and the Lascannons, Dreadnought and all but one marine dies.

And Vulkan charges him! this is truly a one sided combat.
The terminators charge into Abbadon and Mortarion and the 1 surviving Imperial Fist Terminator.
Mortarion fails to kill the Sergeant again and Abbadon dies, but not before he rips off the head of the chaplain, smashes the Sergeant and brings down another Terminator.The medusas, turn to fire at the tactical squad. Farleys rusk heads toward the Fellblade.

The medusas destroy the the tactical but somehow the sergeant survives. Farleys Rusk fails the charge. Mortarion this time kills 3 Terminators and takes 1 wound in return.

Turn 6

Loyalists’ last turn of the game sees the Spartan kill 2 medusas.

Durak Rusk gets a point blank Fellblade to the face

Mortarion fighting the last 3 Termintors and triumphs easily kills the remaining terminators. The Tactical Sergeant charges and blows up the last Medusa.

Being more the less the only surviver Mortarion heads towards his former brother Vulkan and the dual begins!

This fight goes on for ages, both taking wounds off each other and regaining wounds back but eventually Vulkan comes out the victor.

Great game we had, was looking like it could go either way but the the Deathshroud being killed to a man from 9 wounds out of 9 throw the game in my favour.

Horus Heresy Massacre Campaign – Game 1

Over the next few months we will be running a massacre campaign covering the events of the dropsite massacre from book 2 of the horus heresy from forgeworld. This will take the form of a series of linked games or each phase ending in a legendary mission. these are custom missions, not from the normal 40k rule book

The first battle of our massacre campaign saw the imperial fists trying to breach the defences of the sons of horus playing a mision called deady ground. this had 3 objectives that we scored on each round, plus setup in opposite edges. it also used compulsory reserves for half your force.

Trying to keep thing thematic, i decided to take a fortification -someting we have never played with before… And we played without lords of war… We will introduce them as the games continue.

I won the initiative, and set up first. The centre of my line was my bastion with 20 tac marines inside and lazcannons/ master of signals on the battlements. Spartan on the right venetor on the left. Ollie set up just out of range of my heavy weapon squad.



Traitor turn 1 – move foreward to secure the first objective with my spartan and move my venator up. Two lucky lazcannon shots from my spartan knock 2 hull points off the loyalits land raider. My compulsory reserves come on – i rush my jetbikes and rhino foreward – tucking my land raider in behind my spartan for cover.



Loyalist turn 1. the loyalists bring everythiong on except thier contemptorr talon and move forward to engage at long range, but olly has a really bad round of dice rolls. i make a couple of cover saves on the venator… my only casualties are 3 of the jetbikes to heavy fire from the spartan.


Traitor turn 2. I score 1 point. I rush my support squad along the righ flank, while pushing the spartan and land raider toward the centre objective. I blow up the loyalist predator with my venator, cause 1 casualty on the lazer destroyer and get a couple of nice shots on the mortis contemptor, but he makes his invulnerable saves. another nice coup[le of shots blow up the land raider, and the breacher sqaud disembark, but crucially fail thier pinning test – they end up about half an inch away from scoring on thier nearest objective. I turbo boost my jetbikes to the centre to avoid being hit by the spartanagain. My heavy support squad are still out of range – thier only target is the rhino which the immobilize.



Loyalist turn 2.Unable to score they push foreward on the right flank, but due to some poor penetration rolls, it takes fire from the spartan and the lazer destroyer to knock out my rhino, killing 1 of the support squad inside.. the spartan has disembarked its terminatiors – i disembark my plasmas to the rear to give them a long charge, which they fail. The whirlwind fires at my venator, but fails to penetrate – phew! The stranded tac squad get out and push foreward.

Traitor turn 3. I score 1 point. My plasma squad premare to unleash hell on the terminators.. out of 8 shots only 3 hits and 1 wound which is saved. then to add insult to injury one of mine dies from a gets hot! I finally knock out the lazer destoyer and carry on pushing forward to get on to the second objective… meanwhile my large tac squad comes out of the bastion and runs onto the first objective. My master of signals gets a single bombardment and kills a few tac marines…

Loyalist turn 3. Olly scores 1 point…. but he still fails a roll to get his contemptors on. His teminators charge my plasma squad and wipe them out and consolidate towards the centre. His whirlwind zeroes in on my tac squad and does considerable damage – they go to ground and hold on with a good morale test. His breacher squad charges my speeder and cracks it to death… luckilly he consolidated 5 inches, or he would have been off the objective.


Traitor turn 4. I score 2. I try to slow down his teminator squad Four good lazcannon hits – he makes every invulnerable save – damn those storm shields! Im sitting on the objective with my spartan, so i push forward with my landraider – to hopefully charge polox and his terminators with both my terminators and my veteran squad next turn. I rush my venator forward out of cover – hoping to knock out the spartan – but i only manage 2 glances. I charge his mortis contemptor with my 3 remaining jetbikes, but due to some poor dice rolls fail to penetrate even with melta bombs… what you gonna do?

Loyalist turn 4. Olly scores 1. The contemptor talon finally comes on. ollie is shaking his head.. to little to late he thinks…. He half heartedly takes a lazcannon shot at my spartan.. a 6… folowed by another 6 …boom. Not only do i loose a terminator, but the unit fail thier pinning and disembark. I decide to keep them away from theenemy terminators and disembark them near. meanwhile my tac squad are again bombarded by the whirlwind but go to ground and hold on in there. My venator is knocked out and my speeder is assaulted and knocked out by the breacher squad… olly is now off his objective, but luckily gets a 6 to consolidate.


Traitor turn 5. I score 2 again My terminators are stuck out in the open – i try to buy them some time by attacking the warlord and his unit. I disembark my veterans and manage to kill 2 terminators with heavy flamer and bolt pistol shots, but he makes every rending save i put on him… i charge and manage to kill another 3 before y veterans are wiped out… a heroic death. My jetbike squad only cause 1 glance with melta bombs on the mortis contemptor, and he rolls a 6. That sonofabitch will not die.

Loyalist turn 5. Ollie scores 1. Ollie charges my land raider with his terminators, since hes too far away to get my terminator squad. and knocks it out, he drops virtually everything else on my teminators tryng to break the squad and kill my praetor – despite a couple of kills and a couple of failed look out sirs my terminators hold on in there.

I win 6-4 on holding objectives, my warlord hanging on by 1 wound. To be fair another round would have killed me, but he mission was 5 rounds.. and i tried to play to that. A great first game
