So...who's playing 4th? I stupidly threw out my old main rulebook and codex, but that's what I'd rather play.

To me, the addition of destroyer weapons into the game without prior agreement was a mistake. On the flipside, normal games actually have the chance of being more structured apocalypse games.

Competitive play I can't imagine being worth playing; it's going to be rock paper scissors with obscene monstrosities of scissors which cut through rock.

I do feel there is more scope for mad random stuff in games now though so having thought about it and chatted with people who have played it, I like it, but that's probably because I liked apocalypse a lot...

Overall I really like some of the little changes, looks like it's going to be fun....

One thing though. It's all going to be about who you play with!!

Which is a bit of an issue Zak, since one of the big things about 40k is its ubiquitous, wherever you go you can usually get a pick up game.  Now though doing that could be an exercise in futility.

I like quite a few of the small changes, though they could have been addressed in an FAQ. Malefic powers break the game.

I agree it is all about who you play, all games are, but the ruleset is the framework for how we play the game. The idea that the rules should 'give us the option' to take whatever we want is patronising - we could do that before. I have loved 40K for its background and the character of all the factions. The ability to take a themed list has always been there provided one's opponent agrees. We use the rules so that we can expect a game to be reasonably fair and fun for all.

I don't want to have to outline what each of us feels is OK and what is not before a game simply because the ruleset is horribly unbalanced. Many argue that the game isn't meant to be balanced but this is a ridiculous point to make. Who wants to travel to the club, get all their models out and then realise they have no chance of even getting a draw? I don't have to win, but I want there to be a fight.

No game which has multiple factions and lots of special rules can be totally balanced, but it can be to within certain margins. Within those margins is where 90%+ of games will be enjoyable for both players. This is why we have a points system and, to take the argument to its logical extreme, why we use a ruleset at all. If balance isn't important, why don't we all just bring what we own and stand around saying, "pew pew".

The release of this edition is now clear to be nothing more than a cash-grab. I know a PLC must make money and be able to report positives to shareholders. I know there are hundreds of families reliant on GW for their livelihood. I want them to succeed, but this approach is short-sighted. No other company in our industry uses this outdated cash-injection release schedule. If GW were to look outwards for a while, they would see other companies doing it better. They'd see release schedules which make something new available to players of all factions at least every other month. They'd see campaign books which advance the background in meaningful ways and introduce new units and 'historical' characters. They'd see loyal veteran communities invested in testing new ruleset versions and helping to hone them into something with balance and character. I don't want to see them fail, I want to see them reform their outdated business model. They have more customers than any other company in the industry but do the least to involve them. They actively treat them as nothing more than blind consumers. In such a crowded and competitive niche market, this is not the way to ensure a future.

Honestly, we don't see much 40k at the club these days. We have plenty of scenery to support it, though, and 30k is played quite often.
I stopped playing a couple of years back, but haven't been able to bring myself to sell everything.
You should talk to the Havant Wargamers members on Facebook about getting back into it. They have a very active 40k community and meet on Thursdays.

I occasionally play a mashup of 3rd and 4th ed 40k, with codexes from 5th. Yeah, it's simpler than it sounds. However, I loved Necromunda, have played a few test games of Yakromunda and liked what I saw. If you can link me to Inquisimunda I'll check it out 🙂

I'm a bit of a technophobe so not a clue how to do that sorry but if you go onto the yaktribe site and search inquisimunda it brings up the rules add ons and force lists it's sort of a 28mm version of inquisitor expanded from necromunda rules
