I have to say that GW are consistently outdoing themselves with their new codex's.  The quality far surpasses anything they have done before, with good binding and colour artwork throughout.  Each of the primogenitor chapters has at least four pages of fluff, interspersed with generic astartes articles.

Big Changes

The old way of having to take a named character to use a certain chapter has now gone.  The Ultramarines, White Scars, Imperial Fists, Raven Guard, Iron hands and Black Templars all now have their own special rules.  This is achieved by selecting one of the above chapters, and applying it to a Space Marine detachment.  The limitation is that you can only select special characters for that chapter.  No more Vulkan and Shrike hanging out in the same detachment!

You can, however, ally a marine detachment to your primary marine detachment, so long as it uses a different set of Chapter Tactics.

I hated the previous edition of this codex, as it essentially turned the book into a Warmachine type army.  Now you can take a themed army, with rules, without having to take certain characters.

Thunderfire cannons now have Barrage as a special rule.

Characters

There are no new characters in the book, and the existing ones have had a few tweeks that I think fit the theme.  Shrike can no longer deploy with Terminators, for example.  Tigerious has come up smelling of roses, having a massive point reduction and some useful special rules including one of the better Warlord traits.

New Stuff

Centurions look a little too expensive to me, and don’t have an invulnerable save.  Hunters/Stalkers provide the air defence of the army.  One has a gun capable of firing at two separate targets at reduced BS, or twin linked against one.  The other fires a homing missile at flyers, if it misses you can keep rolling to hit the flyer in following turns

Relics give the option of tooling up marine captains to take on all comers.  There is an option for a 2++ save...

This book is exactly what every marine player could ask for.  But the gripe I have is, why couldn't this have been done the Chaos Marine book?

Sounds good I'm picking mine up Thursday.

I think they used chaos as a test and waited to see the reaction to decide which way to go with the marine one.

I like the new additions to the fluff, even if its causing uproar amongst some of the fans.

I've yet to see the new SM codex, but all I can say for the Chaos one is that, despite the flaws.. I do still enjoy fielding an army with it :P I think there's a decent amount of customization and I've created some pretty cool custom characters (Like my Iron Warriors Warpsmith with two power fists).

Competitive wise, Chaos does seem to have taken a big knock... unless you take mass helldrakes.

Commander of the World Breakers Legion - A Black Legion splinter force, lead my the monstrous terminator lord Rul'tuk, notorious for raiding and burning imperial agriworlds and converting entire battalions of imperial guard to their dark cause. Their armour is stained with the ashes of a dozen of agriworlds, set ablaze as burnt offerings to their dark gods. The telltale sign of this legions presence is a trail of thick grey smoke and frenzied worshipers wearing ragged leather and re-breathers strewn across a battlefield. Prepare to burn, weaklings.

I've been spoilt after the 3.5 CSM codex, where I could take Cult troops, not just Mark of xxx.

Tournament wise, I think you would be surprised

Seeing what little work it took to out the Chapter Tactics rules in the latest 'dex, but no Legion rules. Although I can just buy every supplement at £20 a pop instead.

My only worry about the supplements for CSM is that what can they add ? I mean they've said they wont add new models so it's just a few different artifacts and a warlord table really, all those clamouring for Rubric termies etc wont get them.

I think this might be the case with me.

I can't say I'm pleased with the current SM codex, but that might just be bitterness about the chaos book (I don't share Nathan's feelings on any level, but this isn't the place for it)

The new space centurion things though... words aren't bad enough for me to describe my feelings about those.

The bringing back of proper chapters is a nice move though.

I love the new codex... More variety of builds and the chapter tactics are awesome. I may do some mantis warriors to ally with my astral claws.....

Overall the new codex looks very nice, liking the point reductions on lascannons which has been far too expensive for it's abilities for a while.

Centurions.......assault centurions slow and purposeful plus twin linked flamers a happy assault unit do not make,  I can see them being as popular as multilators....

Devastators variant seems ok, t5 w2 gives them some survivability but I can see them losing the benefits of a lot of cover with there sheer size and they'll attract a lot of fire with there relative ease to kill (I see them as slightly tougher terminators or slow bikers with slightly better saves) spam bolters or plasma weaponary will put paid tobthem quite quickly, although being relentless will help if they take gravatation weaponary against high armour armies (useless vs hordes)...overall I think I'd rather just take a full squad of devastator marines or a tank...

Slow and purposeful doesn't make you slower anymore, it stops you over watching, running and sweeping advancing.  The drill weapons don't strike at I1, plus they come with hurricane bolters as standard with the option of taking twin meltaguns.  So even the assault variant can put the hurt on at range.

As for cover, plonk them in area terrain.

Flamers and no overwatch? Lol

still relentless though, good.

Ironclad assault launchers you can swap for hurricane bolters for free and twin linked flamers you can swap for meltaguns for +10pts. Starting to look better but still not looking spend £40 better to me lol. The anti air tank looks very nice I especially like the bracing supports

Got to say im slowly coming round to liking centurions - especially now ive started to see some no gw paint schemes and poses. they are nice with the grav option - since they reroll wounds..... personally the armour is a bit ornate, but im sure some of the heraldry could be scraped off....

bikes are also someting im really interested in  especially with the white scars chapter tactics
