I've been wanting to play around with orc/orruk skin for a while. In the past, I've always gone classic green. This time, I wanted to try a paler shade, with some more realistic flesh tones in there; as if they're called greenskins because of a green tint, rather than full on green skin.

The photo doesn't quite show the colours as they are, as I took it this evening under artificial light, but you get the idea. In reality it is actually less green. I'll probably make a couple of changes next time round, but wanted to see what people think.

Its an interesting take, not seen a whole army done that way. What's the model?

These are just tests with spare orruk brute parts.

This photo, taken in daylight, is a more accurate representation of the colours.

Test01b.jpg

The process is as follows, as best I can remember... Could probably drop a step or two, but this was an experiment!

I mostly used Vallejo game air, but colours are fairly generic:
Airbrush black primer.
Airbrush grey primer from top.
Airbrush flesh.
Airbrush pale flesh highlight.
Airbrush goblin green + glaze medium.
Brush shading with brown violet (similar to old catachan?).
Airbrush dwarf flesh + glaze medium highlight on muscular areas; flesh + glaze medium on bony areas.
Brush dwarf flesh + glaze medium on lips & cheeks.
Airbrush goblin green + glaze medium.
Brush eyes & teeth bone.
Brush gory red + glaze medium into cracks around eyes & mouth.

Not finished anything for a while, but had chance to sit down and get these done for Adam's birthday. They're to fit with his snow-themed board. Phone camera + gloss varnish doesn't really show the shading or dirt I added 🙁

It's a card board with a snowy pattern that I think he bought from Poundland!

Got all the walkers released for The Walking Dead so far painted. The idea was to paint everything except their skin black and white, to help the survivors stand out on the tabletop, and then add gore over the top of that. I'll have to paint some survivors to know whether or not that idea has worked! It has been a fun experiment and certainly sped-up the task of painting 31 miniatures.

Here's a group shot (large pic - click to enlarge). I'll get close-ups of smaller groups soon.

Still waiting on the basing materials to finish my Brutes, which are now fully painted, but I've made a start on converting the 'Ardboyz and revisiting a Black Orc Big Boss conversion I had left around from WHFB. He was originally a 40K Ork Warboss. I've swapped the head as the old one was massive and does't really fit the aesthetic in the newer Orruk models. The 'Ardboyz are Blood Bowl linemen with some 'Ardboyz weapons and some Brutes heads & weapons. Not terribly hard to do, though some greenstuff was needed to blend the musculature at points. Got some big fist syndrome going on with the 'Ardboyz gauntlets, but I can live with it. I'm not being very strict with giving them all two choppas, as they have so many spikes and blades on their forearms and fists. Big choppas will be fairly obvious, as they'll probably be double-headed axes.

Static grass arrived yesterday, so I was able to make the tufts and finish the Orruk Brutes last night.

Some WiP's on my entry for the single miniature category at the 10th Anniversary Painting Competition.

Figuring out components, posing, & placement:

Deciding on bird or no bird. I went with no bird. Amazingly, this bird is not glued, but is balanced on the edge of the shield! Perched, if you will. You probably shouldn't.

Made a start on the first Intercessor squad from the 8th Edition 40k starter box. I've removed pads from all the Primaris marines in the box, which wasn't too time-consuming. As for the paint scheme, I'm going to try to keep it fairly simple. With the models being so similar, and the task being repetitive, I don't want to spend too much time on each.Image Enlarger
