Gents, I now have the campaign system and so plan to run a campaign.

Based an a Western Campaign the following factions are available : Viking, Anglo Dane, Norman, Welsh, Saxon, Breton, Jomsviking, Scots, Franks, Irish, Norse-Gael and Strathclyde Welsh.

Players may have the same factions as on the road to becoming king all will need to be subjugated.

Factions start with a 4 point army but may grow very large through the campaign.

The plan is that we will state our campaign turn intentions at the beginning of the month, which produces the list of who fights who and the scenarios. This should only take about half an hour, players then have the rest of the month to arrange their games when they can fit them in before the next campaign season.

Please let me know who would like to take part and what faction, I will produce a bare bones copy of the rules for all players and sort out roster sheets with people at the club.  When everyone is sorted we will agree a start date.

Hi Ben,

Each player selects their campaign action for the season, Defend (increases reputation), Raid (increases wealth) or Campaign (increases land). Those players selecting Raid of Campaign also select target player.

Assuming 6 players this means that if you chose to defend and no one selects you as a target then you would have no games, however if all other players selected you as the target you would have 5 games to play.  The 5 game situation would be unusual but initially we may need to limit the number who could attack 1 player, but later may need to allow free target selection if a player gets so far ahead that it may be the only way to bring him down.

If a player is away for part of the month or even the entire month we could allow them to be limited in being attacked, pay Danegeld which is allowed for in the rules or even not allow them to be attacked (rivers flooded, mountain passes blocked etc making campaigning too difficult in their lands).

There are no maps involved as land holdings are purely a figure on your roster.  Things will become clearer when I produce the rule notes.

Hi Chaps,

After your battles can you please fill in battle report, dress them up as much as you like to give a storyline and boast of your factions superiority, but the following is the minimum I require to let you know your losses.

1. scenario played. 2. Forces on each side at start eg warlord, 4 hearth, 8 warrior xbow, 8 warrior mtd, 12 levy bow.  After the battle 3. Winner of scenario. 4. Losses from each unit in battle, ie figures removed from table.  5.If warlord 'killed' in battle then roll on table in campaign rules result. 6. Roll on fate table for each faction, amendment to rules for the result promoted units below

If you get the result of promote warriors or levy you may choose to either promote that unit or add up to 4 warriors or 6 levy to a unit, you may never however exceed the slot maximum of 12 warriors or 18 levy in that slot.

Hope that this is all clear but if not I will be at the club on Tues 11th to sort any snags.

Game report:

The dirty Irish lead by Eileen raid the lands of Noble Edouard de Ville seeking plunder, the Normans march to meet them as they attack a peaceful hamlet, resulting in a Harry and Burn scenario.

The Irish force is Warlord, 2 x Curaidh, 6 Hearth, 8 Warriors and 8 wardogs.                                                   

Norman force is Warlord, 4 Hearth, 4 Warriors, 12 Warriors incl banner, 8 warrior X bow.

Irish lose all troops in the ensuing battle except for 1 lone Curaidh this equates to 19 points for the Normans. The Normans lose 13 warriors and 4 hearth during the game, 15 points and they gain 3 bonus points for the building and field they set alight, a close painful victory to the Normans.

In the post battle sequence

Norman dead calculated as 4 warriors and 1 hearth. Irish 4 warriors and 2 hearth, removed from campaign roster. Norman take 2 warriors and the Irish take 2 warriors as reserves adding to the campaign roster.

The Normans gain 1 campaign point and as defending reputation is increased by 1.

Norman role on the fate table and get Good Marriage (my a***) giving +1 land. The Irish get good role receiving 5 Hearth reinforcements. The Irish then role for the ‘killing’ of Eileen again getting the most favourable result on the losers table She loses 1 attack from now on, not so bad as she has an extra attack due to Mighty trait, she is not affected by the having to defend next turn as she is War toothed.

All said and done it was a very bloody game but the permanent casualties are not too damaging to the warbands. This is because we began with reserves so it offsets the devastation, we will see how others get on and perhaps increase the reserves received if we all deem it necessary to perpetuate the game. Does illustrate that in later campaign turns when the warbands are bigger it may not be wise to attack with all of your force.
